That also includes three pitched shutout wins for Alabama, the most recent of which came last season. But LSU looks ready to finally get back on the right side of this series with an offense that ranks among the team’s best — maybe ever. A tablet made for South Africans

Both will come with Android version 2.3.The company has also recently added an eight-inch version, which is said to be a perfect size for handling, reading and web browsing. The price of this device has yet to be disclosed. All tablets have a capacitative touch screen, a standard 3.5mm earphone jack, and a mini HDMI and USB port. Although on-board memory is modest, it can be expanded up to 32GB with a micro-SD card.Giving local retailers a tablet presenceAccording to Wise Tablets MD Gian Shipton, the Wise Touch was developed to provide South Africans with a tablet that would allow them to shop at local retailers from their own homes.“Most South African companies have a good web presence but have not migrated to tablets. Now the Wise Touch gives them a platform to be active on the tablet,” said Shipton. “These are brands people relate to.”Though the tablets are manufactured in China – as is the Apple iPad – Shipton said they are made according to strict specifications and standards.Different from the iPad and GalaxyWise Touch applications fall into one of three categories, namely the Wise Shopping Mall, Wise Business Park and Wise Education Centre. The Wise Shopping Mall allows users to shop for groceries, take-aways, movies, toys and books, do their banking, and access newspapers and magazines.Shipton said that companies in developed countries and elsewhere in Africa are already expressing interest in the Wise Shopping Mall concept. The Wise Business Park caters for non-retail enterprises such as airlines, broadcasters, media houses, insurance companies, law firms, and property agents. For a company to be included on the list of applications, Shipton said they would have to be nationally recognised and own a well-known brand.Apart from the applications, which include the standard offerings for social media, multimedia and entertainment, Shipton has said that Wise Tablets’ other drawcard is a full local support service. Walk-in repair centres will also be opening soon, while sortware updates will be freely available.Another tool added to the tablet is the omnibus communicator, a free application that allows companies to communicate with customers directly.Tablets for educationThe Wise Education Centre is designed for schools that could use the tablet as a teaching tool.Shipton mentioned that 50% of the Wise Touch strategy is to bring the tablet to the education sector. Wise Tablets have created a specific module that allows pupils to view documents, flash videos and load any other media. The company already has access to most of the public school syllabus and some university content, all of which will be provided to pupils and students for free. However, the content can only be used on the Wise Tablet because of encryption and digital rights management issues with content owners.Shipton said the company is working with the University of JohannesburgUniversity of Johannesburg, Wits University, the University of Pretoria and 40 private schools in distributing the tablets and its content.Competitors on the prowlThe Wise Touch is not the first low-cost tablet in South Africa nor is it the first to offer localised content. This is according to Arthur Goldstuck, the MD of independent technology research company World Wide Worx. In a recent ITWeb report, Goldstuck named the wi-fi only, R999 ($122) Colpad as Wise Touch’s major competitor. The Colpad may not boast an extensive list of applications as found on the Wise Touch, but it trumps it with its price. However, Goldstuck acknowledged the Wise Education Centre as a clever move as it will attract parents and students who want to avoid spending money on expensive textbooks.last_img read more

How Camera Lenses are Made

first_imgYou may know how to use a lens but do you know how they are made? In this post we share some background on lens construction and videos that show the fascinating process. As a filmmaker you are probably very familiar with how to use a lens to capture awesome images. You likely know how they work, but do you know how lenses are made? Knowing how lenses are created isn’t necessary to be a successful filmmaker, but knowing the fundamentals of their construction can help you better understand how they function.Creating a LensIn the simplest terms, a lens is designed to direct light to a camera sensor or film…but that requires much more than a simple piece of glass. Lenses need to be specially optimized to minimize artifacts and chromatic aberrations. Different waves of light react differently with certain glass shapes so careful design is important. While most consumer grade lenses are spherical in design, professional lenses usually utilize an aspheric shape, making them curved instead of fully rounded. Moreover, lenses almost always need to be able to change focus which makes the process much more complicated. Not only do you need more than one piece of glass to change focus, you also need to be able to move that glass back and forth within the lens body. An added iris also creates many more moving parts within a lens body. If the lens is a zoom then there is most assuredly going to be even more complicated moving parts. Most lenses have over 100 parts that must be put on separately.Photo via PhotoReviewThe ProcessAs stated above, there are a lot of different working parts in any lens so there is no simple way to create one. However, in it’s most basic form the process of creating a lens (Nikon) is:Mix glass powder in a large mixerMelt the powder to a liquidSqueeze a large sheet of glass out into a long glass stripCut small measured squares of glass out of the larger stripPlace the squares in a mold and melt in an ovenPolish the glassAssemble the lens body with the glass inside The following video by Nikon shows the process of creating their lenses. Notice how hands-on the lens making process is; definitely an insight into why lenses are so expensive.Bonus Video! Deepika Kumari falters and misses Archery World Cup Final gold medal

first_imgIndia’s Deepika Kumari squandered a two-set lead against London Olympics double gold medallist Ki Bo Bae of South Korea, and had to settle for the silver medal in the women’s individual recurve competition at the Archery World Cup Final in Tokyo on Sunday.Deepika won the first two sets, but allowed the Korean to make a remarkable comeback and seal top honours in the season finale in the Japanese capital. The Jharkhand teenager was a whisker away from winning the deciding fifth set but shot a seven in her final attempt, opening the door for her opponent who prevailed 6-4.Dola Banerjee is the only Indian archer to win a gold medal at the World Cup Final, when she triumphed in Dubai in 2007.The showdown with the top two archers in the world rankings took place in rain, but Ki dealt with the elements better when it really counted.Deepika had won the silver medal at the World Cup Final last year as well, going down to China’s Cheng Ming in the final in Istanbul. She was hoping to go one better this time round, but it was not to be.Only the top eight archers in each category make it to the World Cup Final, on the basis of their performance in the Archery World Cups through the year. Deepika was the only Indian competing at the elite seasonending event.Deepika had gone into the London Olympics as the World No.1, but had a disappointing outing and was displaced by Ki as World No.1.advertisementThe Indian capitalised on a sloppy start by Ki and took the first two sets 26-23 and 27-25. But as the Korean improved, Deepika went the other way.She had managed two perfect 10s in the first two sets, but failed to repeat the feat thereafter, with the conditions making it tough for the archers.Ki won the third set with scores of 9-9-10, while Deepika could only shoot 9-8-7. In fact, her final shots in the last three rounds all accounted for seven each. The Korean levelled the gold medal match, winning the fourth set 8-10-8 to 8-8-7.Deepika opened the decider and shot a nine, with Ki replying with an eight. Deepika, thus, had her nose in front. Both archers shot nines in their next attempts, meaning that the Indian still had a one-shot lead going into the last two arrows.Deepika could have sealed the deal with a 10, but handed the initiative to the Korean with a seven. It meant that Ki had to hit a nine to clinch the gold medal, and she did just that. The victory capped a great season for the Korean, who had won gold medals in the individual and team events at the London Olympics. Korean Choi Hyeonju took home the bronze medal with a 6-4 victory over Jennifer Nichols of the United States.Earlier in the day, Deepika won two matches to make it to the title clash.Japan’s Miki Kanie was hardly a match for the Indian, who prevailed 7-1. The semi-final against Nichols was tied 2-2 before Deepika took the next two sets to clinch a berth in the final.Ki had to go through a shoot-off with compatriot Choi to get into the gold medal match.Korea took the men’s recurve gold medal as well when Kim Woojin edged past two-time defending World Cup Final winner Brady Ellison in a shoot-off.France’s Gael Provost defeated Korean Im Dong Hyun 6-2 for the bronze medal.last_img read more
