By Voice of America (VOA) September 11, 2019 Several organizations, some of them Venezuelan, have joined the petition. They seek to have the commission set up during the September 2019 sessions. These groups are asking the UN to task the commission with investigating cases of reported torture and inhumane treatment, arbitrary detentions, discrimination, forced disappearances, and violations of freedom of speech and of the right to life, health, and food.“The victims of this serious humanitarian and human rights crisis in Venezuela deserve a forceful response from the Human Rights Council that will ensure respect for the right to truth, justice, and redress,” said José Miguel Vivanco, director of the Americas Division of Human Rights Watch.Among the groups that signed the petition are Acción Solidaria, the Center for Human Rights at the Andrés Bello Catholic University, and Civilis Derechos Humanos. Other groups include Espacio Público, the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect, the International Commission of Jurists, and PROVEA.In July, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet published a report that accused Nicolás Maduro’s regimen of committing “serious human rights violations” and documented extrajudicial killings. In the petition, the groups stated that the commission should be equipped with enough resources to investigate and report to the Human Rights Council within a specific timeframe. The results of the investigation should be submitted to the UN Secretary General, in addition to relevant UN organizations, such as the Security Council and the General Assembly, they said.
(Visited 71 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0 At a recent panel, scientists doubted whether it would be a good idea to revive the human species if it went extinct. They call themselves experts. In a report on Live Science, Laura Geggel says that five ‘experts’ engaged in a debate about ‘de-extinction’ of animals (resurrecting extinct animals back through genetics). Things got interesting during the Q&A when someone asked about another mammal, Homo sapiens. Geggel describes the response,If humans were to go extinct, would it be ethical to revive the species, to allow us to live once more on this blue planet? It’s a tough call, but maybe not, according to a panel of five experts who debated “de-extinction” during the annual Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York City on Wednesday (March 29). Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, director of the AMNH Hayden Planetarium, moderated the debate, which honors Isaac Asimov (1920-1992), a biochemist and science-fiction writer who famously wrote the “three laws of robotics.”The only beings that would be able to de-extinctify humans, though, would be mythical space aliens or further-evolved earthlings who understand genetics and know how to perform genetic engineering. What would they do with us low-lifes?Were another intelligent life to de-extinctify humans, would they put us in a zoo-like environment? For a sentient being, that would be “extremely frightening and scary,” said panelist Greg Kaebnick, a research scholar at the Hastings Center, an independent bioethics research institute in Garrison, New York. “The animal welfare concerns just get overwhelming.”Kaebnick must have forgotten that some of his evolutionist predecessors did exactly that. In 1904, led by hard-core Darwinian Samuel Verner, evolutionists exhibited Ota Benga, a black man from an African tribe of pygmies (fully human), into a zoo (see report by Jerry Bergman on Creation.com). He was exhibited as a “primitive man” or an “emblematic savage,” scarcely more than an ape, even though Mr. Benga later got married, learned English, was baptized a Christian. The dehumanizing treatment he had received at the hands of evolutionists, however, left him scarred for life, and he eventually committed suicide, Bergman says.We can tell it wouldn’t be real live African apes that we are familiar with who would bring back humans from extinction. Chimpanzees don’t appreciate Beethoven—or even Justin Bieber, for that matter. Phys.org says that music played to apes, including “work by Mozart, Beethoven, Adele and Justin Bieber,” fell on deaf ears. Contrary to previous reports, “Playing music to captive chimpanzees has no positive effect on their welfare, researchers have concluded.”Yes, it would be “extremely frightening and scary” to imagine Planet of the Apes soldiers torturing captive humans with Justin Bieber music all day. But we ask, how did ‘animal welfare concerns’ evolve? Is that not a question of morals? If morals evolve, then one could imagine a moral system emerging on Planet of the Apes that considers torturing humans with Justin Bieber as a moral good, in their captives’ best interests. We bring you these two reports to show how secular, liberal, atheist ‘experts’ have gone completely wacko. They are the intellectual progeny of staunch atheist Isaac Asimov who—having rejected the God of the Bible—created fantasy worlds of his own to sell to the public.Morality is rooted in human exceptionalism. As Jefferson famously wrote, we are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights. We are not just mammals, though our souls are housed in physical bodies (very exceptional bodies) that share all the mammal traits. To call the human species ‘just a mammal’ commits the fallacy of reductionism. We humans have intrinsic value not because of our mammalian traits, but because we are eternal souls created in the image of God.
“For me personally, I have two Google accounts: I have a corporate and personal [account], and it is a pain,” admitted Seth Sternberg, director of product management for Google+, in a roundtable discussion with reporters in San Francisco Thursday. And Sternberg is definitely not alone. Many people have two Google email accounts—a personal Gmail and a corporate Google Apps account. Those ought to be Google’s best users. Instead, they’re the most frustrated ones. And many people set up multiple email accounts for other reasons. Social networks like Facebook and LinkedIn let them associate multiple email addresses with a single personal or professional identity. Google doesn’t.What that ends up doing is disrupting the entire process of laying the Google+ social net atop the Web. Every time a user tries to +1 a link, log into a website with Google+ sign-in, or personalize search, they’re confronted with Google’s fragmented view of online identity. So for Google, the email-as-account concept disrupts users’ ability to seamlessly use Google+, which in turn makes the network’s constantly increasing integration with the rest of the company’s apps and services more and more painful with every turn. And for users, it’s just plain obnoxious having to use incognito browser windows and all sorts of other workarounds to try and simply manage their online identity. No wonder Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr are the go-to networks for finding friends and sharing information.Identity, If And When You Want ItGoogle says it’s trying to get better.“We sanded off all the rough edges,” David Glazer, a director of engineering at Google, said in the recent roundtable event. Google, to its credit, has introduced an account chooser that makes it easier to stay logged into multiple accounts. But those fixes don’t address the core problem—Google’s email-linked identity model. What Google really needs is something above an email address that could be used as an identifier for all of a user’s various accounts. This higher-level identifier could be something akin to a Twitter handle or a Facebook username. This new Google login could have a registered primary email address—the way Apple and Amazon handle logins to their online accounts—but it should sync up your other Google+ accounts.Separating personal and professional sharing could be simply handled with a strongly established Google+ concept: Circles, or lists of contacts.(And, of course, you should still be able to establish a Gmail account for an unlinked, throwaway identity—for, say, a Craigslist posting or mailing lists.)Umbrellas Are GoodGoogle showcased its ability to neatly fold up services with Hangouts, and the strategy is a no-brainer. It resolves so many problems users face when a company’s products are all around them, yet they have no idea how to manage them all and end up just turning away from what they feel they don’t need. An umbrella strategy to Google+ and Gmail is a much taller order, but it’s one of the biggest impediments standing between the search giant and a more steady, fuller-scale adoption of its social network. So Google, please give us that umbrella, and you’ll likely see more people standing underneath it if its done right. Google+ has never looked and felt as it good as it does right now. Alas, looks aren’t everything.A massive overhaul of the service, announced Wednesday during a keynote at Google’s I/O conference for developers, has brought it in line with the most modern and functionally powerful Web design principles. It now has a multi-column layout, scrolling menu bars, and enormous images. Google also rolled out an umbrella messaging service called Hangouts, a standalone app for Web and mobile that neatens up the sloppy mess that was Voice, Talk, and Google+ messaging. All of this is great news for heavy users of Google+ who have been awaiting a design push that looks and feels like 2013. But there’s still one giant problem plaguing the service and Google’s entire social platform at large: the hub of your Google life is still an email address, and that’s a nightmare for users with multiple Gmail accounts.Since taking over as CEO in 2011, Larry Page has been talking up the notion of “One Google” to unify the search giant’s disparate services. But the reality is that it’s very hard as a user to experience a unified Google until Google realizes that a person is a person, not an email account. At best, the complex process of trying to manage multiple Gmail accounts with Google+ and all the various apps involved slows users down. At worst, it could keep some users from adopting the beautiful new services altogether. Meetings have gotten a bad rap over the years, with people mistakenly assuming every meeting is a productivity drain. In fact, good meetings can be a huge boost, especially if they help you work through issues and come up with new ideas. For meetings to be useful, though, it’s important to find ways to overcome the very things that have traditionally spoiled meetings. Here are five common meeting annoyances, as well as some tips that can help fix them.Too Many NotesCapturing information in meetings has always been complicated, especially once flip charts and whiteboards get involved. Some businesses still rely on this method of data gathering, finding that their frantic scribbles help get their ideas on paper. However, at the end of the meeting, someone is usually tasked with collecting all that information, which too often means trying to decipher handwriting and turn incomplete thoughts into something coherent. Microsoft Pix, along with tools like smart markers and electronic whiteboards like Kaptivo, provide a way to capture those scribblings, improving on the information to create useful content that can be later used. All this done through new advancements in AI.It’s important to find a way to make sure any data gathered during a meeting is collected and shared with those who can use it to get results for your business.Nobody Is Taking NotesAs you’re speaking to a roomful of people, is anyone taking notes? If not, how can you be sure the information discussed will be remembered after everyone leaves the room? Note-taking is an ongoing issue for meeting leaders, especially as technology has gradually made offices paperless. It’s important that meeting organizers fully embrace technology, making it as easy as possible for participants to bring their laptops or tablets into the meeting to take notes. Applications like GoWall move meetings beyond talking heads, equipping attendees with the tools they need to not only take notes, but to share them with others in the audience. As others speak, employees can add their own notes to a group wall, inspiring others in attendance to build on those thoughts.Virtual Attendees Don’t ShareVirtual meetings with AI have given remote team members the ability to attend meetings, whether they’re on the road or they always work from home. Unfortunately, those same remote attendees may not be as engaged as those who are in the room, since doing so means finding a way to chime in. Zoom provides a “raise hand” feature that lets your remote workers signal that they have something to say. Always pay close attention to avoid missing these alerts. You should also make a concerted effort, with every meeting, to give remote workers an equal chance to participate in the meeting. In addition to asking each person to give a brief update, also include some of your remote workers in the agenda each month to make sure they feel included.Several People DominateEveryone has been in a situation where a “meeting hog” takes over the conversation, either lengthening a meeting or cutting into the time that might have been used by others. It’s up to meeting organizers to keep everyone on track, quickly steering the conversation if someone begins to dominate. SmartSheet’s free meeting agenda templates can give you the start you need to create professional-quality agendas. You’ll find with an agenda in place, your meetings are shorter but on topic and your attendees are engaged, since they’ll know what to expect.Participants Aren’t EngagedIs everyone in your meeting paying attention from start to finish? The only way to gauge this is to look around the room and see if anyone has checked out, but even then you may not know. This becomes even more complicated with remote workers, since they could be surfing the internet or watching TV and you’d never know. If they aren’t captured on video at all times, they may even get up and walk way at various intervals. One long-popular trick to ensure people stay engaged is to randomly call on people to speak on the topic at hand. Make an effort you include remote participants in that effort. If you’re hosting virtual events like webinars, coordinators like Virtual Venues specialize in helping hosts keep attendees interested.Although many have preconceptions about meetings with AI, they don’t have to be a reality. With the right tools and techniques, you can change the way your staff feels about meetings, whether they’re in the office or working from home. Make sure you measure the results to determine whether your tools are working, including pulling reports and noting whether the items discussed in the meeting were followed up on after the fact. Small fanLow wattage light 150w/300wYou should take note that the size of your plastic bowl will affect the coverage area. If you need to cover a larger area, you will need a larger bucket.Take a sheet of aluminum, scrunch it up, and then unfold it back into a straight sheet. The foil should now have a lot of creases. Place this into the bottom of the bowl and fill with water. If you don’t have aluminum, a broken CD or a broken mirror will help achieve the same effect. However, you will need to be careful while handling the sharp objects.Take your light and direct it into the bowl. The water needs to be moving for the reflections to be noticeable on the background or subject. To achieve this, ever so slightly run your hands through the water, or aim a fan at the water’s surface. This will cause a tranquil movement of the light. The bigger the water container, the more prominent you can make the effect. If it’s a large reflection, you may want to establish the source — i.e. showing a bathtub or a fish bowl in the room. It’s important to let your audience see where the glimmer is coming from — even if that isn’t the cause of the effect.Underwater SequenceImage via Vogue Korea. You can also achieve a more defined effect by submerging your subject in water. This technique is going to be extremely limited in regards to filmmaking, as you’re going to have to have a large studio space to use this effect in any way other than a medium close-up, and even then you’re going to have to make sure the rigging is incredibly stable. While the actor may look somewhat underwater, he’s actually on a studio floor space with a water tank situated above him with a light projecting through the water and onto the actor. Much like the first effect, the water needs to move for the wave reflections to appear. Given that this tank is going to be too large to move, we can see a studio member swooshing the water back and forth.Image via Vogue Korea.I can only imagine a handful of situations in which this effect may be put to good use, but knowing the effect is an extra tool in your box. It adds a touch of dreamlike beauty that would be incredibly hard to replicate in post-production.Projecting Rainfall from WindowsRain is a very symbolic element of life. As rain clouds materially block sunlight, they’re linked to darkness, sadness, denial or despair. As such, rain often accompanies a moment of emotional impact. You can go one step further and physically project rain onto the subject. Take the following scene, for example. The scene is from Legends of the Fall. Susana is currently feeling despair, and the rain hitting the window is projected onto her — as if it is crying with her.You can achieve this effect with a very easy setup. You simply need a low-key lighting configuration, with the key light behind a pane of glass with water is falling on it. Have someone pour water through a watering can onto the glass. It is important that that key light is the one that shines through the glass. You’ll lose the effect if you light the room too brightly.Do you have any creative suggestions how to use water to enhance lighting setups? Let us know in the comments. Create a surreal environment by reflecting lights off of a water source.Top image via Sony Pictures. If there’s one element that you don’t want near your lights, it’s water. That said, combining water with a light source can create some fantastic lighting results. Just make sure safety is a top priority. Here are a few water lighting techniques that use everyday items.Water ReflectionImage via Ugly McGregor. There’s an otherworldly beauty to the reflection of water hitting a subject or background. It adds a fascinating dynamic to the scene, although one must be careful as not to make the effect too prominent and distract the viewer. There are several ways to achieve this, but let’s have a look at the cheapest way.Supplies Needed:Plastic bowl or tubReflective MaterialAluminum foil, CD, or broken mirror
