Although it may be too early to attribute the current demand for properties with big backyards to the COVID-19 outbreak, Cairns Property Office Redlynch’s Shane Trimby said he expected to start hearing from southerners “wanting to get out of the cluster” of larger cities pretty soon. He said in the last month, all his sales were to local buyers only. Daina and Perry Oates in thir spacious Edge Hill backyard. PICTURE: STEWART McLEAN“The ones looking at backyards, some have mentioned things like being separated or away from the neighbours because of COVID, so it is becoming part of the discussion,” Mr Trimby said. “The really big backyards on 1000 sqm properties, there’s hardly anything like that now; the youngest is probably about 20 years. If you have anything listed at 800 sqm or above, it’ll get snapped up pretty quickly so we know the demand for those backyards is there.” He said the demand for large backyards was driven more by the lifestyle choices than COVID-19 awareness at the moment. Champions In Real Estate’s David Galloway-Penney said due to the access Far Northerners had “to a great outdoor environment”, most were happy with small or medium size properties on 400 to 600 sqm blocks. But he said buyers were starting to see the financial value in backyards. “There’s an increase in demand for stand-alone properties or houses with larger backyards particularly because of the price point. You can pick up a fairly decent home with a backyard, at the same price as a fairly decent unit,” he said. Diane and Perry Oates moved from Victoria, and into their Woodward St, Edge Hill home in February, but they had to wait 18 months until they found their pick. “We definitely wanted a backyard for that tropical, outdoor lifestyle,” Ms Oates said.
