first_imgStory Links Normal, Ill. – The Drake University women’s golf team finished tied for eighth after the first two rounds of the Redbird Invitational at the Weibring Golf Club on Saturday, Sept. 8.The Bulldogs recorded a 36-hole total of 597 which is just four strokes behind host team Illinois State and seven behind Southern Illinois. IUPUI currently leads the event at 586 with Xavier and Bradley trailing by one and three strokes respectively.”I’m proud of the way the ladies started the season today,” said head coach Rachael Pruett-Hornbaker. “They’ve all put in a lot of work in the summer, and it’s showing early. For us to shoot two sub 300 rounds and still feel a little disappointed at the end of the day, tells you just how competitive this group is.”Drake was paced by sophomore Haeri Lee who posted rounds of 70 and 73 to finish tied atop the leaderboard with Elyse Emerzian of Bradley. Lee’s first-round 70 ties a career-low set in the first round of the Red Rocks Invite last March. “Haeri was solid today and has herself in contention for the individual title,” Pruett-Hornbaker said about the freshman. “This will be great experience for her to be in this position heading into the final round.”Aimee Gerschke shot 76 in the first round and then shot a 72 in the second round to move up 12 spots into a tie for 23rd. Kristen Giles recorded a 36-hole total of 151 (75-76), and Sam Paulak and Sigurlaug Jonsdottir were close behind with 155 (77-78) and 166 (77-79), respectively. Freshman Abby Marting also competed as an individual, firing back-to-back rounds of 77 to tie for 50th.The Bulldogs are back in action Monday morning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.Print Friendly Version First Day Results last_img
