first_imgHey, you know that Dark Tower movie that’s been in production for what feels like forever. It’s actually coming out soon. On August 4, we’ll see the first movie in what Columbia Pictures is hoping will be their next big multi-part franchise. We’ll get a full trailer tomorrow but two of its main actors, Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba, decided to share some footage with us today. The coolest/corniest part? They did it in character on Twitter. It all started with a strange, cryptic tweet from McConaughey, who plays the mysterious Man in Black. “You want the tower?” McConaughey started. Elba, who plays Rowland the Gunslinger, replied, “To find the tower is my purpose. I’m sworn.” To which McConaughey answered, “Then as the world’s last crusader, don’t break your promise… you’re closer to the tower than you know.” All this led to the following exchange and our first glimpse of footage from the movie. @idriselba I know this. Deal with it. #DarkTowerMovie— Matthew McConaughey (@McConaughey) May 2, 2017Ooh, OK. The Man in Black walking through a field of corpses, promising that someday the tower will fall. Not to be outdone, Elba shared some footage of him looking like the coolest dude in the universe. @McConaughey I deal in lead. #DarkTowerMovie— Idris Elba (@idriselba) May 2, 2017That’s also some cool imagery right at the beginning, with the door in the barren wasteland. Which world does that lead to? However this movie turns out, one thing is already certain: Idris Elba was the perfect choice for Roland. That casting alone, and the way he looks in this teaser, pretty much guarantees I’ll be down for just about anything this movie turns into.Fans of the series may notice that neither of these teasers appears to be scenes from the books. There’s a reason for that. Rather than a straight adaptation of the book series, the movie, directed by Nikolaj Arcel, will be an entirely different take on Roland’s journey. The movie will act as sort of a sequel to the book series. That’s probably for the best. Stephen King’s book series spanned a significant portion of his career. It’s fun to go back and read the series now because you can clearly see his evolution and changing influences as a writer. It also went to some really weird places, especially at the end. I’m all for metafictional weirdness, but it’s probably best if the movie doesn’t have the characters actually meet Stephen King. Better to start after all that and go off in a completely new direction. The Dark Tower will be in theaters on August 4, 2017.last_img
