first_imgStay on target As much as people seemed to like them as big dumb fantasy action-adventure open-world games, there’s been a lot of debate over how well Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-Earth: Shadow of War hold up as faithful Tolkien adaptations. I don’t care at all about Lord of the Rings and even I could tell something wasn’t right about turning a big spider into a hot lady and having you just make your own ring, dammit. Not to mention all the orc slavery. For all of its epic grandeur, Lord of the Rings always seemed like it cared more about humbler perspectives like little hobbits. And no character seems lower on the totem pole, while also being super popular and recognizable, as Gollum. So it only makes sense this scrawny little nude paranoid man is finally getting his own video game. While Gollum was shoe-horned in as a quest-giver in the recent AAA Middle-Earth games, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum sounds like a much more appropriate use of both the character and the mythos. The game is a prequel, showing Gollum’s life before meeting Frodo. This will also be a new Gollum, not a Peter Jackson/Andy Serkis Gollum.Gameplay details are sparse, although we do know the character’s warring split personality will come into play when making decisions. Also considering developer Daedalic Entertainment’s history of point-and-click adventures, expect lots of depressing puzzles about pixel hunting for a precious ring that just isn’t there. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is scheduled for 2021 to release on PC and whatever next-gen consoles are around by that point. But there’s plenty of other Middle-Earth material to chew between now and then. Here’s the trailer for the upcoming Tolkien biopic. Get hyped for Amazon’s upcoming Lord of the Rings series.
